A B.C. man who was the victim of a homophobic slur printed in his yearbook more than four decades ago has received an in-person apology from the North Vancouver School District and his former high school.
What is the purpose of this act?
- To clear up any uncertainty surrounding matters of the education system; this involves elementary school through to post secondary school.
- To inform each member involved in the education facility their specific jobs and duties as well as stating what is expected of them.
- To state information on the fees, taxes, students financial assistance and funding.
- This act goes over the laws regarding transfer students; catchment areas; students moving from different cities, countries, states or continents; enrollment requirements; francophone or bilingual speaking youth; school property; housing for post secondary students; and home schooling.
- There is important information regarding taking action against the school board and the process that an individual must ensure in this type of situation.
- The law around class size, student records, insurance, the school calendar and school elections are also in this act.
What powers are conferred on the state or its agents?
- The state is able to decide where new education facilities are going to be opened.
- What funding goes to which sports team, program, or class.
- What type of services are provided within the schools.
- Where each school district starts and ends.
- Who is legible for student loans.
- Who is eligible for a career with the board of education.
- The Lieutenant Governor in Council may make different regulations for different circumstances; the board of education may charge fees for students records; and the superintendent of achievement makes the final decisions on any appeals made.
How does this act benefit society?
- By allowing youth to have free education from preschool to the end of grade twelve. This takes the pressure off parents to teach their children how to read, write, basic math and any other skills that get taught during these years of education.
- This Act aids in settling any conflict that may come up at the education facilities.
- The Act is very thorough in describing every situation that may arise and create confusion or disagreement. .
- The post-secondary section of this Act benefits society by allowing students to get an even higher degree of education after they graduate from high school.
- There are ways to get funding through grants, bursaries, scholarships and sponsors.
- This Act ensures quality learning.

- By helping my clients feel comfortable with seeking help. I would look into the rules surrounding whatever their issue may be and make sure they know of every option available to them.
- I would help spread awareness to the necessary staff that could help my client feel more safe or help them succeed. I would help them come to a solution and decide on what we can do to be more effective in their life.
